Product Description

Fiction of Flying is the poet’s experience in Australia as a migrant. It is made up of portraits of the mundane, from job seeking, to riding the train, to singing a few home songs when the weather gets really cold and wet in Melbourne. It is also about reconciling a new identity with a new sense of (feeling at) home, and negotiating with a second language that is at once intimate and alien to the poet’s tongue. It is a collection of stories that migrants talk amongst themselves but don’t say out loud in case they appear sullen (or ungrateful!). It is about how they use their own strange sounds / strange colours / strange feathers on the pens to write about a destination they’ve always dreamed of but could not quite reach. It is about looking up, looking back, and looking around all at once in order to feel belonged. To the poet, these poems are about flying somewhere but ended up somewhere else. They are about bewilderment, loneliness, and desires that bound all flying creatures together in the sky.
