Are there guidelines for manuscript length?

Answer

We recommend between 40 and 250 pages for poetry, and up to 100,000 words for fiction and non-fiction.

Can I submit a short amount of poetry or a chapbook?

Answer

Unfortunately we are not accepting chapbooks at this stage. From time to time we commission an editor to curate the Slow Loris chapbook series. Information on this can be found in the Slow Loris area of the website.

Question 3

Can I submit a proposal rather than a finished manuscript?

Answer

Yes, simply follow the submission link above, choose the relevant category (poetry, fiction, non-fiction), follow the form prompts, and instead of attaching a manuscript document, attach a synopsis as detailed as you can manage with a proposed timeline.

Question 4

Can I submit multiple manuscripts and/or submit manuscripts in both poetry and fiction?

Answer

Yes, just make sure you’re submitting each manuscript as an individual submission in the correct location and the correct contact information, and we will treat each manuscript with fresh eyes.

Question 5

Can I submit a manuscript to Puncher & Wattmann if I am submitting it to other presses simultaneously?

Answer

Yes. As you submit your manuscript, there will be a checkbox asking whether you have submitted it elsewhere. If your manuscript is successful with Puncher and Wattmann we will let you know, and then you can decide next steps.

I’ve submitted a manuscript via the link, when can I expect to hear back?

Answer

Please allow three months for us to go through the manuscripts. Your patience is appreciated; since reopening submissions, we have received a considerable number of manuscripts to read and process.

If I’m successful, what are the next steps?

Answer

If your manuscript is successful, congratulations! We will email you with the next steps, via the contact details you provided in the submission portal.

Question 8

Can I submit a manuscript if I am not based out of Australia?

Answer

Puncher and Wattmann prides itself on championing Australian literature to an Australian audience, so we do not accept submissions from authors who are not currently based in Australia.

How long is the submissions period open for?
