Kim Cheng Boey, ‘Amulet’

like the coin they keep under the tongue
of the dead to buy them passage
safe crossing from port to port

I carry the image of you
alive in its deadness
dead in its aliveness

each day it grows
more like an icon
lit from within by a spectral light

a dim pulse surviving
from our vanished days
your face a distant echo

touched by memory
to sainthood, all your flaws

rubbed and kissed

to a subdued aura
your presence and absence
bled into each other.
