Michael was born in Grimsby, England and came to Australia when his family emigrated to Perth in 1972, at the age of twelve. He studied at UWA, and supported his writing with teaching there, at Edith Cowan, and more recently at Melbourne University and its residential college, Trinity. He returned to Perth in 2020.
